Position Summary

The growth of Michigan State University’s international work can be tied to the development of the Office of International Studies and Programs (ISP). ISP is the hub for international research, teaching, and outreach at MSU. As a university-level office under the leadership of the Vice Provost & dean, ISP supports international activities throughout the institution, working to mobilize MSU's research and scholarship, enhance study abroad and other educational programs, form and strengthen international partnerships, and welcome and support international visitors, scholars and students. Leading ISP, the Vice Provost & Dean for ISP will be responsible for advancing international engagement at the institutional level, fostering global partnerships, and encouraging and supporting MSU’s students, faculty, and staff with international interests. 


This leader serves as the public voice for international education and scholarship and plays a key role in promoting and facilitating cross-campus opportunities for international education, research, and engagement. The Vice Provost & Dean’s portfolio encompasses a large and complex set of units, including twelve (12) Area and Thematic Centers and Programs; eight (8) Student and Scholar Programs; eight (8) offices of International Services and Administrative Support; and numerous affiliated globally focused units across campus. The Vice Provost & Dean also serves as the jurisdictional authority for international relationships, supporting and providing consultation that directly assists with the development and continuation of MSU’s strategic partnerships with select institutions abroad.


Reporting directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice Provost & Dean is responsible for developing and implementing the University’s international agenda and internationalization efforts. The successful candidate will be a visionary leader with demonstrated experience in global engagement and international research and education; have proven skills in academic administration, resource management, and program formation; will be an able and experienced manager and leader capable of motivating diverse teams of employees with the skills and talent to develop and execute plans to enhance the university’s international endeavors and to manage change within a complex environment; and have a distinguished record of success in obtaining external funding from grants, contracts, and development initiatives.

Required Degree


Doctorate -International Relations or related field


Minimum Requirements

  • Have demonstrated an ability to develop global partnerships to enhance research and educational opportunities for students and faculty and to expand international programs and presence both locally and abroad.

  • Have demonstrated an ability to achieve goals through promoting collaboration, team building, and working cooperatively with peers, faculty, staff, and a diverse group of university constituencies.

  • Have demonstrated an ability to engage and develop international or intercultural partnerships with civic, community, cultural, and industry leaders locally and globally in ways that will benefit university students, faculty, and alumni.

  • Have demonstrated or related experience with international student recruitment, including sponsored students, scholars, employees, and sponsoring entities.

  • Possess the collaborative spirit and skills required to forge effective alliances with multicultural and international stakeholders.

  • Possess the intellectual and managerial leadership to inspire excellence in international education, research, and service across the university.
