The AVPUOE liaises, facilitates, and enhances the engaged research, scholarship, and learning of faculty, staff, and students across the University who partner with external communities to create societal impact. While the primary responsibility for fulfilling the University’s commitment to outreach and engagement lies with the individual colleges/departments/schools, the AVPUOE encourages and supports those efforts within the University by:
Supporting and advancing outreach and engagement work that includes all fields, disciplines, communities, and social identities.
In conjunction with the VPUOE, supervises University Outreach and Engagement units as well as giving priority to workflow and reassigning projects within units as volume and urgency require.
Facilitating partnerships and dialogue centered on outreach and engagement with MSU vice provosts, deans, and unit directors.
Assisting in securing internal and external resources to support outreach and engagement activities at MSU.
Providing leadership on university-wide strategic initiatives such as the university DEI plan for external engagement, pre-college activities, the Carnegie Engagement Classification, and other designations and recognitions.
Providing leadership on developing and implementing evaluative tools for assessing engaged research and scholarship for faculty promotion and tenure, post-tenure review, and annual reports.
Providing leadership on recognizing outreach and engagement in promotion across different faculty and staff classifications
Implementing innovative approaches that involve students in outreach and engagement to increase community partner impact and enhance the student experience
Represents UOE in meetings and events in the absence of the VPUOE.

Knowledge of the precepts and practices of community-engaged scholarship.
Experience collaborating across disciplines and campus constituencies.
Experience in strategic planning, program building in a higher education setting.
Demonstrated record of inclusive leadership and creating an inclusive work environment.
Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity, inclusiveness, and cultural richness in the outreach and engagement environment.
Demonstrated record of effective supervision of people and management of programs.
Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Experience developing, monitoring, and reporting on strategic goals, objectives, and metrics.
Doctorate -Ph.D., Ed.D. or other related terminal degree
Minimum of 10 years of experience at a public or private university.
Strong record of publication, training, or consultation in engaged research and scholarship.
In-depth knowledge of administrative and academic structures, policies, and procedures at Michigan State University.
Experience with the national or international higher education networks of engaged scholarship, engaged learning, or broader impacts.
