Job Description
The search will remain open until the position is filled; however, to be considered for the initial screening, candidates should submit a complete application package by September 4, 2023. We are filling two positions. Our anticipated start date for one position will be during the Fall 2023 semester, and the other Fall 2024. Virginia Peninsula Community College welcomes applications for Nursing Faculty. Founded in 1967, we serve the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg as well as counties of James City and York. As of Academic year 2021-2022, our college was the sixth largest in the Virginia Community College System in terms of students served. The College served 8,987 students in academic credit instruction in that year. We are proud of our award-winning faculty, our nationally accredited and professionally recognized academic and training programs, and strong dual enrollment and early college programs, powerful partnerships, and our student success outcomes. This college epitomizes its mission to change lives and transform communities. The college is nestled in the backyard of the NASA Langley Research Center, Jefferson Lab, multiple military bases, the largest nuclear ship and submarine building company in the United States, the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, Colonial Williamsburg, and several major medical and healthcare institutions. Our community is home to the Commonwealth’s largest infrastructure project, the first U.S. offshore wind energy development in federal waters, a diverse array of homeland defense and security organizations, excellent public-school systems, renown colleges and universities, theme parks, museums, research centers, entrepreneurial incubation labs, fine dining, arts, entertainment, and leisure. Nursing faculty are required to provide instruction, support, assessment, and mentorship to Virginia Peninsula Community College’s students, staff, and supporting faculty. Nursing faculty are required to fully participate in the mission and community of the college, and are committed to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusivity campus wide. The major emphasis shall be on teaching, by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, clinical sites, field sites, indoors, outdoors, distance learning, individual conferences, and related activities to help the students develop their interests and abilities to the fullest capacity to become better persons, better workers, and better citizens. Teaching Load Teach minimum of 15 credit hours/24 contact hours of lecture, laboratory, simulation, and/or clinical courses each semester and/or other instructional load as assigned, which may include classes at the Hampton or Historic Triangle campuses and/or off-site locations; on-campus and online classes; day, evening, and/or weekend classes. Contribute high levels of energy, engagement, creativity, and leadership to the teaching and learning environment. Professional Activities and Contributions Design, develop, and assess curriculum. Serve in the role of a faculty mentor for students and contribute to College governance and to service. Collaborate in a diverse and collegial organizational culture with high standards for performance. Remain current in the academic discipline and in trends in teaching through professional development, further education, and/or scholarship. Office Hours To promote the availability of faculty to work with individual students, all full-time faculty members are required to post on or near their office doors a minimum of 10 hours per week as student contact hours to be available to work with students on their individual academic and occupational concerns. Additional Activities/ Temporary Assignment Additional activities include committee work, student activities, volunteer and/or community activities, student advising, and professional activities, e.g., discipline-specific initiatives as well as program assessment. The teaching Faculty may be temporarily assigned non-teaching duties. Performs other duties as assigned.
