Job Description:


The Athletic Academic Advisor will oversee academic support services for sports teams assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics. This position will work closely with student-athletes in the review of class scheduling, tutoring, or study skill needs. The Athletic Academic Advisor will communicate as needed with appropriate coaching staff regarding student-athlete advising, academic and athletic eligibility issues. The Athletic Academic Advisor will work cooperatively with professional college advisors, registrar, and compliance to help ensure student-athlete progress-toward-degree completion according to NCAA, conference, and Southern Utah University guidelines.




Proposed Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Responsible for coordinating and monitoring student-athletes' degree progress and NCAA academic eligibility; assigning and verifying study hall hours and coordinating tutorial sessions; and conducting proactive mentoring with identified at-risk student-athletes.

  • Reports to the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics.

  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.


Education and Experience Requirements:



  • Bachelors degree is required.

  • Master's degree in counseling, education, educational psychology, higher education, or similar field preferred.

  • Previous experience working with diverse and historically underserved populations preferred.

  • Previous experience working with students in a higher education setting preferred.

  • Must possess knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedure; policies, procedures and guidelines established by SUU and the NCAA; skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database and word processing software; learn office and university-specific software; communicate effectively in both oral and written form; set priorities and complete assignments on time; establish and maintain a good rapport with coaches, students, & staff; work effectively and patiently with students; provide support for student development with demonstrable concern for students; identify problems, evaluate alternatives and recommend solutions; and work evenings, nights and weekends as necessary.
