Job Summary


The Academic Advisor promotes student persistence and completion through proactive outreach and support in collaboration with faculty and staff across the College. These efforts enhance the quality of the student experience and sustain a student-centered learning environment, leading to completion and workforce development. The Advisor builds supportive and personalized relationships with students to clarify academic and career pathways and connect them to appropriate College resources.  

Responsible for demonstrating LSSC’s core values of caring, communicating, collaborating, and celebrating.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities


  • Utilizes proactive advising methods focused on student persistence, efficient scheduling, and credential attainment. 
  • Maintains a historic record of all individual academic advising session notes and materials. 
  • Communicates with advisees in person and through phone, text, email, and the College LMS (Canvas).
  • Utilizes the College CRM (TargetX/Salesforce) to manage outreach and communication, tasks, student performance tracking, meeting appointments, and other activities.
  • Assists students in the selection of an appropriate academic pathway aligned with their career interests, as well as, course selection, information related to initial transfer credit review, academic program requirements, interpretation of institutional policies and procedures, and graduation audits. 
  • Supports the performance of an assigned student roster, providing guidance across programs.
  • Provides evening advising one evening a week. 
  • Serves as a referral agent for students in academic distress, which includes monitoring and record keeping via LSSC’s early alert systems. 
  • Engages in outreach efforts in alignment with the established student intervention, re-enrollment, and completion plans.
  • Communicates effectively with current and prospective students, community members and college employees, in person, by phone, in writing, and by appropriate electronic means, adhering to privacy of student records requirements (FERPA). 
  • Delivers Academic Advising presentations aimed at reinforcing student academic and career exploration for AA, AS, Certificate and Baccalaureate students. 
  • Assists with the delivery of departmental advising services, including new student orientation, recruitment, and intrusive advising strategies focused on at-risk indicators. 
  • Provides off-site advising support as needed for College events or at designated high schools for Dual Enrollment.
  • Participates in data collection for the College’s continuous improvement initiatives and accreditation compliance. 
  • Participates in the assessment of measurable learning outcomes. 
  • Contributes to department and division strategic planning and program review initiatives. 
  • Serves on assigned department and college-wide committees, councils, and work groups. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities


  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively facilitate advising and recruitment workshops and/or presentations to both large and small audiences.
  • Ability to maintain good working relations with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Demonstrate good organizational skills and leadership ability, ability to work independently on a variety of assignments simultaneously with attention to detail and with a high level of accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to collect, code, and analyze data for assessment and evaluation purposes. 
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
  • Ability to utilize multiple computer applications to access and record student information. 
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred. 


Minimum Qualifications & Education


EDUCATION:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution required.
  • Minimum of 3 -4 years of professional experience working directly with students in an academic setting in higher education.
EXPERIENCE: 
  • Required: At least one year of professional experience working directly with students in an academic setting in higher education.
  • Preferred: At least one year of advising experience in an academic setting in higher education. Experience with academic advising.  
  • Demonstrated experience with online learning and Internet technology.
